I will tell you what they are and similair artists to check for but I am not going to write long entries all the time anymore (I'm sure I will, occasionally). I can't figure out how the hell to do the equivalent of an LJ-cut on this thing, so forgive me if the posts are long. Here are a few links for today.

Temper D is a drum n bass DJ who many people say is the next Andy C (I thought Friction was the next Andy C... whatever). His selection is pretty dark, which is cool. This particular set does not hold a candle to an average Andy set, but it's still good. This was done on three turntables live at Phazed on April 24:

Panacea – Rave Music Resurrected (dub)
Raiden – I hate you motherfuckers (dub)
State of Mind - sun king (CIA)
>>Moving Fusion and Fierce – nows the time (Ram)
Lethal Khanage and Temper D – double standard (dub)
Signal to Noise – nanobugs (Pleroma)
>>Total Science – champion sound hardcore will never die remix(CIA)
Limewax – 666 (dub)
Hive and Keaton – violent sound (Violence)
Lethal and Khanage – murkage (Offkey dub)
>>Ed and Op – bacteria (Virus)
>> BC – the Nine (BC)
Mr L – back to your roots (L)
>> Dillinja – all aboard (Valve)
Twisted Individual – rusty sheriffs badge (Reformed)
Logical and Prode – el nino (dub)
Temper D and K-Fire – tabledeath (Offkey dub)
>>Dillinja – in the grind VIP (Valve)
>> Future prophecies – dreadlock (BBK)
Decimal – Earthling (?)
>> Concord Dawn – don’t tell me (Timeless)
The Sect – nerve attack (Offkey dub)
BSE – the cooler (BSE)
>> Digital – deadline (31)
>> Subfocus – X-Ray (Ram)
Evil C and DJ Masheen – death threat (Dub)
>>Total Science – dubplate remix (CIA)
Lethal and Khanage - jawbreaker (Offkey dub)
>>Hive – Neo (Violence)
Prodigy – Voodoo People (Pendulum Remix)
>>Total Science – nosher remix (CIA)
>> Total Science – squash (CIA)
Pendulum - Vault
Raiden and Propaganda – machinesoul (Offkey)
Propaganda – axis and allies (Offkey)
Freeland – we want your soul (Ed Rush and Optical remix)

right click, save as

Fatboy Slim is a great DJ, regardless of what you think of his production. Here are a couple recent sets:

live in glastonbury. I think this one is from 2004, so not too recent.
live at alterego 4-18-06. A bit of a different style, less upfront than most of his sets. And no, I don't know why that word is in the file host's name.

Erol Alkan is an electro producer from the UK, this is a live set of his from July 2005. I'm not sure if it is a live performance or a DJ set, though. right click, save as

Spring Mix

I made this compilation for a friend, but decided to upload it because I thought some people would like to hear it. When starting out, I not only thought of what I listen to in the spring, but I also tried to capture what a whole day sounds like. Waking up to Chicane's "Overture" and stepping outside into the sun to Manual's "Clear Skies Above the Coastline Cathedral". When Pelican's "(blank)" comes on I thought about coming inside to cool off and relax. Ulrich Schnauss' "Knuddelmaus" sounds like the sun going down, and Planet Funk's "Inside All the People (Harvey's Ibiza Sleepy Remix)" is a nice break in the evening before people come over to BBQ and hang out. Explosions in the Sky, Horace Andy and War keep the mix at somewhat of a brief uptempo stage until Cymande's "Changes" comes on, and everyone is sitting around talking. When it ends, everyone goes their separate ways and I am anxious and excited for the next day to come so I can do it all again.

This mix was mixed/edited using Acid Music Studio 5.0

Tracklist:
1. I know I have done the Snowy Days mix, Ready for Spring, and now a Spring mix. I did it unconsciously, I swear. I hope you enjoy it. It is supposed to be warm tomorrow and Wednesday, so I hope you listen to it then and any other warm day this spring.

Download here

Practice Mix 3-21-06

juelz santana - The point of the contest is to mix as many records as possible in 10 minutes while still being technically proficient. A big part of the contest is audience reaction/crowd participation. If anyone wants to come out and see me do my thing, I'd really appreciate it. It's going to be good, trust me. Since this is sponsored by midwestravers, most of the DJs are going to probably be spinning house, techno, or some dark jungle. Not that that stuff is bad, but i am going to try and bring my own style of mixing (playing everything) to the comp. I start to play at 2:20 and if I win I will play again at the end of the night. I'll be hanging out all day, too so if I haven't seen you in a while say hi. The address is 1305 Dundee Road in Buffalo Grove. The phone number is 847-253-3151. As an A&R for Def Jam, he helped bring hip-hop to the UK. He has produced the Happy Mondays' "Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches" and has remixed Massive Attack, Snoop Doggy Dogg, and Robert Owens, among others. He has gained the most acclaim as a DJ, and with good reason. U2 asked Oakenfold to open for them on their Zoo TV tour, and in the late 90's Oakie held residencies at English superclubs Cream and Gatecrasher while still frequently playing out in Ibiza. In the early 90's Oakenfold was playing house music, but in the middle of the decade turned to goa and psy trance. His 1994 goa Essential Mix is legendary, featuring tracks from powerhouses Hallucinogen and Man With No Name but also features several excerpts from Vangelis' beautiful "Bladerunner" soundtrack as well as Ennio Morricone. In 1999 however, the sound evolved into progressive trance (this is not the same as progressive house) and later uplifting trance. Oakenfold was at the forefront of the sound and in 1999, amidst residencies in clubs and playing gigs all over the world, he was invited by Pete Tong to be the resident DJ on Radio One's "Essential Mix", something that had never been done before (unless you count Tong himself) and has never been replicated since. This particular mix is recorded live from Home @ Space, Ibiza.

His sets at the time were untouchable. Speaking as a fan I have never heard a DJ - regardless of genre - set the mood like Oakie, and I have never heard any mixes that sound as fresh as his do, and they still have replay value to this day. Paul Oakenfold has something that can't be learned and that is instinct. He knows (or knew, anyway) exactly what record to play and when to play it. There are many trance jocks that mix technically better than Oakenfold, but their sets don't hold up the way his do. It's generally just anthem-bashing, uplifting fodder that never goes anywhere. Not with Oakie's sets, though. They have a start and end point and keep you listening and loving the music the whole time. His mix CD Tranceport is what got me into trance music and DJing. One of the first records I bought was Three Drives on a Vinyl's "Greece 2000", the second track on the mix.

This Essential Mix demonstrates why Paul Oakenfold is a great DJ. The tracks played are brooding, yet beautiful. He wasn't playing an entire set of "build-up-breakdown-build-up-breakdown" uplifting trance. It's trance music that is actually entrancing though not in the same way goa or psy is. I will just say this - every Oakenfold trance mix from about 1994-2000 (this includes his wonderful Another World mix CD, which is the biggest selling dance album of all time) is beautiful because after it is over, you can't believe it was that long. Every time I listen to Tranceport it seems like only 15 minutes has past, when in fact it has been over an hour. This is why Paul Oakenfold deserves all the acclaim he recieves. This is why I can forgive him for making records like "Ready, Steady, Go" and "Starry Eyed Surprise". Perhaps it is me just being a fan or being nostalgic, but this mix is one people should think of when thinking of a great mix and Paul Oakenfold is a DJ people should think of when they talk about great DJs.

Tracklist:

000:00 Nalin & Kane - "Open Your Eyes [Reworked Club Mix]"
007:30 Nat Monday - "Nucleus [Main Mix]"
012:56 Blondie - "Nothing is Real But The Girl [Tenaglia Mix]"
019:11 Two Fishes - "Opera [Vince O'Matic Mix]
023:45 Freefall feat. I made this mix to remind people that spring is coming soon and winter is almost over. As far as track selection, I tried to play tunes that are somewhat deep while at the same time keeping it funky. This mix is all about giving little moments of bliss that make you think of what it will be like when it is warm out. By the final track i want people to feel good knowing that spring is coming and these cold days are almost over. Enjoy.

tracklist:
1. The mix starts a bit slow, then gets a little dark but by the end it is somewhat uplifting. I would say it is more of a compilation than a DJ mix. Either way, enjoy.

This mix was made using Acid Music Studio 5.0

Tracklist:
1. Vangelis - Rachel's Song
2. Whether or not you think that is a good thing is another issue. My personal view of crunk music is that it is great at parties, but very few artists have replay value. The only artists I can think of that put out good "crunk" albums are Three Six Mafia (basically their entire catalog - the production is crazy), David Banner ("Mississippi"), and most recently Young Jeezy ("Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101"). Their are some "shuckin and jivin" fools like D4L ("Laffy Taffy") who set hip-hop back about 25 years.

Aside from those who make terrible music, crunk, a bastard child of Miami bass, has produced some of the most creative productions ("Sippin' On Some Syrup", anyone?) along with some of the most intense productions ("Salt Shaker") hip-hop has ever heard.

With all this hype surrounding an offshoot of hip-hop, one would think it a no brainer for Josh Davis (AKA DJ Shadow) to get involved somehow. While people know him for producing some of the best beats of all time, and one of the best albums out of any genre of music ("Endtroducing") many don't know of his love for Miami bass and "club" music. In an Urb magazine review he did at the end of 2004, I distinctly remember atleast three of his favorite productions being Lil'
Jon's and one was David Banner's. In 2005, he put out a mixtape entitled "The Funky Skunk" which prominently featured (among the usual obscure samples and funk) music from Crime Mobb, David Banner, and Baby. This may have come to surprise as backpackers who "keep it real" and generally don't listen to anything that came out after 1995, but Shadow's message was one I resonate - hip-hop is hip-hop regardless of which coast it comes out of. You can bump Smoothe da Hustler one minute and then listen to DJ Magic Mike and still like 2Pac. Music is music. This brings me to Shadow's favorite track of the moment, "I Got Grapes" from Nump. A little background info on Nump - thanks to user "wazzlez" on the DJ Z-Trip messageboard:

"Nump was an intern at 880 Studios in Oakland, where Chief Xcel of Blackalicious has his studio in Room C. Xcel, Shadow, Lyrics Born, and pretty much most of the original Quannum crew have recorded and mixed stuff there, and Nump helped out on some stuff. If you listen to the Nump tracks and then to the new Blackalicious album, "The Craft", you'll notice that they are mixed very similar, particularly in the low-end clarity. That's because Nump mixed his album in Room C, Xcel's studio."

The track itself is very minimal, which resembles David Banner's "Play" in that respect. The drums feature a heavy bass drum and what sounds like some sort of conga. The other percussion is simple hand claps and snaps. Lyrically, it is your average club track. One of the MCs (from the Federation) name drops Dana Dane, which is cool. The topic of the song is purple ("grapes") and weed. Generally though, the lyrics are about money/girls/weed/purple/etc. The chorus is something I could see everyone singing along with at a party ("I got graaaaapes"). This track is a surefire banger and it is good to see someone in hip-hop not complying to boundaries and supporting/playing whatever the fuck they feel like.

http://www.beatstreet.ca/product_info.php?products_id=10229&artist=Various+Artists

Hip-Hop Mix 2-2-06

This is the first mix (of hopefully many) that I will be posting on this blog. Tonight I decided to record a hip-hop mix. It's good for when you just get up and want something to start the day to. I didn't really mess with the tracks too much. I didn't really cut too much or anything, I just wanted to play some hot tracks.

Tracklist:

Fat Joe - The Shit Is Real (DJ Premier Remix)
Black Moon - Act Like You Want It
Diverse - Build
Jurassic 5 - Freedom
A Tribe Called Quest - Award Tour
A Tribe Called Quest - Find A Way
A Tribe Called Quest - Check the Rhime
Phife Dawg - Flawless
Pete Rock & Grand Agent - This Is What They Meant
Lords of the Underground - Flow On (Pete Rock Remix)
OC - Time's Up
Method Man & Redman ft. It wasn't until they came together as Coldcut and formed the highly innovative label Ninja Tune that they really started to have any success. With tracks such as "Mo Beats", "Beats and Pieces", and "Greedy Beat" they helped lay the foundation for hip-hop instrumentalists like DJ Shadow and RJD2. The Ninja Tune label has released albums and singles from DJs and producers such as the deep hip-hop of DJ Food, turntablist extraordinare Kid Koala and Russia's DJ Vadim.

Coldcut themselves, however, are probably most known for their remix of Eric B. and Rakim's "Paid In Full". As DJs, their "Journeys by DJ: 70 Minutes of Madness" is commonly regarded as both turntablist purists and dance music afficionados as the greatest mix album of all time. Coldcut take DJing to the next level, quite literally. The mix boasts a slew of artists ranging from Coldcut themselves and their Ninja Tune brethren to the old school hip-hop of Boogie Down Productions and Newcleus to the smooth soul of Jhelisa, even touching down in dub and reggae territory with artists such as Junior Reed. That isn't all though - they even play ambient music - yes, proper ambient music by piano player Harold Budd (the beautiful "Balthus Bemused By Color") and Luke Slater's 7th Plain, and along side this they even find time to spin jungle and techno pioneers Photek and Plastikman. Basically, if you don't have it - buy it.

With so much acclaim and praise, one might think it a no brainer for Coldcut to have done an Essential Mix right after the release of "Journeys by DJ". Instead, it took eleven years for Pete Tong to give the Ninja Tune offices a call and schedule a time for Coldcut to get busy on the Radio One decks. The mix starts off with some classic hip-hop, including Sweet Tee and A Tribe Called Quest's "Can I Kick It?" with the original Lou Reed vocal over it. The mix then moves in to expiremental electro-house territory, before starting the second hour with some drum-n-bass like DJ Zinc's "Super Sharp Shooter" and Krust's infamous roller "Warhead". Laced in between is Wayne Smith's heavy "Under Me Sleng Teng". Finally rounding out the mix is Franz Ferdinand's "This Fire" over a floating dub reggae track, they then put Bjork's "Hidden Place" with a backing track that consists of reggae guitar, 808 drums and opera-like vocals.

While this mix is not another "Journeys by DJ", it is an entertaining mix that keeps you nodding your head the whole time and leaves you in awe at some of the things Coldcut come up with -- George W. Bush doing "Imagine", for one. If you like DJ Yoda and Dan Greenpeace's take on Coldcut's cut-n-paste style from their Essential Mix in 2003, you will like this one as well. Coldcut prove that even in an era when a kid with a computer can create "Jay-Zeezer" it still takes talent and a knowledge of music and DJing to create truly beautiful music using . It is rare that you get a DJ mix that contains creativity. It is even rarer to find an Essential Mix with longevity that doesn't just contain the newest and hottest tunes.

(yes, these guys make ridiculously good hip-hop)

http://s65.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=24CH77TKT7GIE237DYTJAHQ8WR

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=1LVT76Z2

Cybotron featuring Dillinja - Threshold

This track came out on Prototype Recordings back in 1996. I will be posting up DJ mixes that I have done, DJ mixes I have been listening to, as well as tracks that I am feeling. They won't be one particular genre, it will just be music that I like. The links will be mostly on YouSendIt, meaning they will be up for one week or a limited number of downloads. I do not expect a lot of people to check this blog, so I think YSI is the best choice for a host because I have found that it is the fastest of all upload sites. If you have a request for a mix by a certain artist, just comment.

This first set is by Valve recordings' DJ Friction. I would compare him to Andy C in his mixing style. This set is very good with many different styles represented throughout.

MC SP is on the microphone for this one and he actually spits lyrics, it's not all double time 'biddy-biddy-biddy' non-sense.

DJ Friction live from Portsmouth on 1Xtra Bass Week 3/01/05
01 dillinja – gang bang
02 spirit – siren
>> fresh – signal
03 dillinja – 96 thing
>> dubplate - wots my code [total science remix]
04 q project – ask not vip
>> roni size - trust me [remix]
05 mr. l – back to your roots
>> fresh – tombraider
06 d bridge – true romance vip
07 influx uk – ghost people 2004 vip
>> digital – deadline 08 zinc – steppin stones vip
09 zen - rubarb & custard
10 shy fx – plastic soul
11 peshay - buzz
12 chase & status - love’s theme
13 marcus intalex - afrikka
14 shy fx & t power feat. jenna g – feelings
15 d-type - the way
>> ram trilogy – titan
16 capone - style baby
>> m.i.s.t. – outta space
17 chase & status – duppy man
18 logisitics – together vip
19 sub focus – x ray
20 dillinja – in the grind vip
>> shimon – hush hush
21 konflict – messiah [spor remix]

http://s44.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=06AGYB6EYECXV2QG9EIFR62JJ7
